Early Life
He was born on 7 September 1915 in Kamarphadia village near the Dikhow River in present-day Sivasagar district, Assam. From childhood, he displayed exceptional academic ability and developed a deep interest in Assamese literature, history, religion and culture. His father, Manik Chandra Neog, played an important role in nurturing his love for education despite not having formal schooling himself.
Maheswar Neog completed his school education with outstanding results and later pursued higher studies at Cotton College. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Assamese before completing his Master's degree in Modern Indian Languages from the University of Calcutta. His strong academic background laid the foundation for a lifelong career dedicated to research, teaching and preservation of Assam's cultural heritage.

Academic Career
Maheswar Neog began his professional life as a teacher before joining Gauhati University in 1948. Over the following decades, he established himself as one of India's leading scholars on Assamese civilization and the Neo-Vaishnavite movement.
His academic career included several prestigious positions. He served as Deputy Director of the Literary Workshop at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, under the Government of India. Later, he became Jawaharlal Nehru Professor at Gauhati University, where he guided generations of students and researchers. After retiring from Gauhati University, he joined Punjabi University, Patiala, as Sankardeva Professor and continued his research on Assamese history, literature and performing arts.
His scholarship extended beyond classroom teaching. He delivered lectures across India and abroad, participated in national academic bodies and contributed to numerous research institutions dedicated to Indian culture and literature.
Contribution to Assamese Literature and Culture
Maheswar Neog made remarkable contributions to almost every aspect of Assamese studies. His research covered literature, folklore, religion, music, dance, theatre, painting, epigraphy, lexicography, philosophy, historiography and cultural history.
One of his greatest achievements was bringing Satriya dance to national recognition. Through extensive research and documentation, he demonstrated that Satriya possessed all the characteristics of a classical Indian dance tradition. His efforts helped introduce Satriya dance to scholars and cultural institutions across the country, paving the way for its later recognition as one of India's classical dance forms.
He also carried out pioneering research on Srimanta Sankardeva and the Neo-Vaishnavite movement of Assam. His studies provided valuable historical insights into the religious, artistic and social transformation of medieval Assam and remain standard references for researchers today.
