Life & Legacy
Madaram Brahma was born in 1903 in Kokrajhar, then part of the Dhubri district of Assam. He completed his school education at the Government High School in Dhubri. From an early age, he developed a deep interest in literature, language, and education, which later became the foundation of his remarkable career.
He began his professional journey as a teacher and gradually earned recognition for his dedication to education. In 1932, he became the Headmaster of Harisingha High School in Darrang. His commitment to public service later led him to join the local administration in 1945, where he became the first Bodo officer to serve as a Block Development Officer. Alongside his administrative responsibilities, he remained actively involved in promoting education, rural development, and the preservation of Bodo culture.
Madaram Brahma made an extraordinary contribution to Bodo literature through his poems, devotional songs, dramas, and literary collections. His writings reflected the traditions, beliefs, history, and social life of the Bodo people while encouraging the development of their language. Many of his literary works became important references for students and researchers and continue to be included in academic syllabuses and competitive examinations.
His early publications, including Khonthai Methai and Boroni Gudi Sibsa Arw Aroj, are regarded as landmark works in Bodo literature. He also authored several dramas that portrayed historical events and social values, helping to popularize Bodo theatre. Through his writings, he inspired future generations of Bodo writers and played a significant role in preserving indigenous literary heritage.
The Government of India recognized his immense literary achievements by conferring upon him the Padma Shri in 1988. His contribution remains a milestone in the history of Bodo literature, and several educational institutions continue to honour his legacy. A school bearing his name and the central library of Bodoland University stand as lasting tributes to his lifelong service to education and literature.
Madaram Brahma passed away on 6 September 1990 at Kokrajhar, Assam. Although he is no longer among us, his literary works continue to inspire scholars, students, writers, and readers across Northeast India.
