After completing his higher studies in England, he returned to Assam and joined Gauhati University as a Reader in Physics. Despite being a successful academic, literature and cinema remained his lifelong passion.
Literary Career
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia occupies a unique place in Assamese literature for his realistic storytelling, psychological depth and sensitive portrayal of human relationships. His novels and short stories explored family values, social change, morality, loneliness, women's lives and the complexities of modern society. His simple yet powerful writing style made his works popular among readers of all generations.
He also played an important role in Assamese journalism and children's literature. He served as the founding editor of the well-known literary magazine Prantik, which became one of Assam's most respected literary publications. He also edited the children's magazine Safura, encouraging young readers to develop an interest in literature and creativity.
Apart from fiction, Dr. Saikia contributed significantly to science education by preparing Assamese-language science textbooks, making scientific knowledge more accessible to students.
Contribution to Assamese Cinema
Dr. Saikia revolutionized Assamese cinema by creating meaningful films based on strong literary narratives. Between 1977 and 1999, he directed eight feature films, seven in Assamese and one in Hindi. Most of these films were adapted from his own stories and novels.
His debut film, Sandhyaraag (1977), created history by becoming the first Assamese film selected for the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India. The film was later screened at several prestigious international film festivals, bringing global recognition to Assamese cinema.
His films were known for realistic storytelling, natural performances and socially relevant themes. Rather than relying on commercial entertainment, he focused on human emotions, ethics and everyday life, earning widespread appreciation from critics and audiences alike.

Death
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia passed away on 13 August 2003 in Guwahati, Assam, at the age of 71. His death marked the end of an extraordinary career, but his legacy remains alive through his books, films, educational contributions and cultural institutions. His works continue to influence Assamese literature and cinema, ensuring that his vision and creativity are remembered by generations to come.
