Early Life
Dhaneswar Engti was born on 1 November 1955 at Palam Engti Gaon in the Dengaon area of Karbi Anglong district, Assam. He grew up in a culturally rich tribal society where the Karbi language, folklore and traditions shaped his early life. His surroundings inspired him to develop a deep appreciation for literature, music and indigenous heritage from a young age.
Education
He completed his primary education at Merrok Government M.E. School, Dengaon and passed the HSLC examination in 1972. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Government College, Diphu, in 1978. Continuing his academic journey, he earned a Master's degree in English from Gauhati University in 1981. Although highly qualified in English literature, he chose to devote his literary career primarily to the Karbi language.
Career
Dhaneswar Engti served in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and retired as Joint Secretary in 2017 after years of administrative service. Alongside his government career, he continued writing, composing songs and promoting indigenous literature. His work reflects the traditions, customs, values and social life of the Karbi people while encouraging younger generations to preserve their mother tongue.
He started writing during his school days for magazines and literary publications. Over the years, he became one of the leading literary voices of the Karbi community. His writings have contributed significantly to the documentation and growth of Karbi literature at a time when many indigenous languages face the threat of decline.
Literary Contributions
Dhaneswar Engti has authored around 19 books and composed nearly 100 songs in the Karbi language. His writings include poetry, essays, cultural studies, songs and books that celebrate the history, customs and identity of the Karbi people. His literary works have strengthened the written tradition of the Karbi language and inspired many young writers.
