Life & Legacy
Born and raised in Assam, Mukul Chandra Goswami initially pursued a career in banking. However, a deeply personal experience within his own family changed the direction of his life. While caring for a close family member suffering from schizophrenia, he and his wife, Anjana Goswami, experienced the emotional, social, and financial challenges faced by families dealing with mental illness. This journey inspired them to dedicate their lives to supporting others facing similar circumstances.
In 1996, Mukul Chandra Goswami resigned from his banking career and established Ashadeep from his own residence with a mission to provide dignity, care, and rehabilitation to people living with mental health conditions. What began as a small initiative gradually developed into one of the most respected mental health organizations in Northeast India.
Under his leadership, Ashadeep expanded its services by establishing several specialized programs. These include Roshmi, a residential home for people with mental illnesses; Navchetna, a rehabilitation program that helps recovered patients reintegrate into society; Prashantiloy, a day-care centre for senior citizens; and an outpatient mental health clinic offering counseling, treatment, and community support. These initiatives have benefited thousands of individuals and families across Assam and neighboring states.
Mukul Chandra Goswami has consistently promoted awareness about mental health, encouraged early treatment, and worked to reduce the stigma associated with psychological disorders. His efforts have highlighted the importance of compassion, rehabilitation, and community participation in improving the lives of people affected by mental illness. Through Ashadeep, he has also supported caregivers by providing guidance, counseling, and long-term rehabilitation services.
His work has received appreciation from medical professionals, social organizations, and government institutions. The Padma Shri, awarded in 2014, stands as national recognition of his remarkable service to humanity and his pioneering efforts in the field of mental healthcare and social welfare.
Although Mukul Chandra Goswami is primarily recognized for his social work rather than literary contributions, his vision and dedication have inspired many voluntary organizations working in healthcare and community development. His journey demonstrates how personal adversity can be transformed into a lifelong mission of public service.
