Life & Legacy

Early Life

Indira Miri was born in 1910 on the day of Vijaya Dashami into the family of Rai Bahadur Sonadhar Senapati. Although her ancestral roots were in Arjunguri village of present-day Sivasagar district, she spent much of her childhood in Shillong. Her father strongly believed that girls should receive the same quality education as boys, an uncommon vision during that period. His encouragement helped Indira become one of the most educated women from Assam of her generation.

Education

Indira Miri began her education in Kolkata, where she attended Bethune School before completing her higher studies at Scottish Church College. She later earned a Bachelor of Teaching degree and received advanced Montessori training in Ahmedabad under the renowned educationist Maria Montessori. With a government scholarship, she pursued a Master's degree in Education at the University of Edinburgh and also completed teacher training at Oxford University. Her international education equipped her with modern teaching methods that she later introduced in Northeast India.

Career and Educational Contributions

After returning to India in 1947, Indira Miri was appointed Chief Education Officer of the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA). Working from Sadiya, she travelled extensively through remote hills and villages, often on foot and by elephant, to establish schools and promote education among tribal communities. She believed education should reach every child regardless of geography, gender, or social background.

During the devastating Assam-Tibet earthquake of 1950, she actively participated in relief and rehabilitation efforts while continuing educational activities. Under her leadership, the number of schools in NEFA increased significantly, laying the foundation for educational development across the region.

In 1957, she became the founding Principal of Jorhat B.T. College, now known as the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Jorhat. She later served as Principal of Banikanta B.T. College, Guwahati, where she trained thousands of teachers who went on to serve schools throughout Assam. She also held important positions as Chairperson of the Assam Social Welfare Board, founding Principal of Guwahati Kanya Mahavidyalaya, and member of the Executive Council of Gauhati University.

Personal Life

In 1932, Indira Miri married Mohichandra Miri, Assam's first Chief Conservator of Forests. Together they raised three children while continuing their commitment to public service. Despite balancing family responsibilities, she remained devoted to educational reform, women's empowerment, and social development throughout her life.
