Education
Kanak Sen Deka received his primary education at Belsar No. 1 Primary School and continued his schooling at Belsar High School. He passed his Higher Secondary examination in 1953 and later completed his Intermediate studies at Nalbari College in 1955. He graduated from Cotton College in 1957. He subsequently studied Political Science at Allahabad University and later obtained a Master's degree in Political Science from Gauhati University in 1961.
Teaching Career
Before becoming a full-time journalist, Kanak Sen Deka worked as a teacher in several schools in Assam. He taught at institutions including Dewe, Kakaya, Soigaon, Azara and Sonapur. In 1963, he joined Sipajhar Higher Secondary School as a subject teacher. His teaching career helped him remain closely connected with students, education and the social issues affecting Assam.
Journalism Career
Kanak Sen Deka made journalism the central focus of his professional life. He joined the Agradoot newspaper group and played an important role in developing the publication from a weekly newspaper into a more influential Assamese news organisation. He became closely associated with Agradoot and later served as its Editor-in-Chief. The newspaper became widely known for its coverage of Assam's social, political, cultural and public issues.
He also launched the English weekly The Action in 1990 and took responsibility for its editorial direction. From 6 October 1995, he served as the editor of the daily Agradoot. He also wrote the drama collection Ekank Panchama and the literary work Sahitya aru Jibon. His travel writing includes Hudsonor Pora Lohit Ganga.
Role in Asam Sahitya Sabha
Kanak Sen Deka has had a significant association with the Asam Sahitya Sabha, one of the leading literary and cultural organisations of Assam. He served as its president for three consecutive terms. He served as President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha sessions at Sipajhar - 2005, Belshar - 2006, Chapar - 2007 and Dakshinpat special annual sessions.
During his leadership, efforts were made to bring different ethnic and language-based literary organisations closer together. The formation of the Sanmilit Sahitya Sabha Mancha brought several literary organisations under a common platform and reflected his emphasis on cultural cooperation and social harmony.
