Birendranath Datta was born on 1 March 1935 in Nagaon, Assam, into a family that valued education and culture. His father, Kalpanath Datta, was a school teacher, while his mother was Mandakini Datta. Though the family originally belonged to Panera village near Baihata Chariali, his childhood was spent in different parts of Assam because of his father's profession. From an early age, he developed a deep interest in literature, traditional music, and the cultural heritage of Assam.
Education
He began his schooling at Chenikuthi L.P. School in Guwahati before continuing his education in Goalpara. An outstanding student, he secured top ranks in both the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations under Gauhati University. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, and later completed his Master's degree in Economics from Gauhati University. His growing interest in folklore eventually led him to earn a Ph.D. in Folklore Research under the guidance of the renowned scholar Prof. Prafulla Dutta Goswami.
Academic Career
Dr. Datta started his teaching career in 1957 as a lecturer at B. Borooah College. His academic leadership later took him to Pramathesh Barua College as its founding Principal, followed by principalships at Goalpara College and Pandu College. In 1979, he joined Gauhati University, where he became Head of the Department of Folklore Research and played a significant role in strengthening folklore studies in Assam. After retirement, he continued his academic service at Tezpur University as Professor and Head of the Department of Traditional Culture and Art Forms. He also established the North Eastern Archive for Traditional Arts and Folklore (NEACTAF), which became an important institution for preserving the region's cultural heritage.
Literary Contributions
Dr. Birendranath Datta authored and edited numerous books in Assamese and English covering folklore, literature, language, history, and cultural studies. His research helped preserve many traditional art forms and folk traditions that might otherwise have been forgotten. His publication Cultural Contours of Northeast India remains one of the most respected reference books on the cultural diversity of Northeast India. Through his writings, he highlighted the importance of indigenous traditions while encouraging modern academic research on Assamese culture.
Musical Career
Apart from being a scholar, Dr. Datta was also a celebrated singer, lyricist, and composer. His melodious Assamese songs remain popular across generations and continue to be broadcast on radio and television. His musical compositions successfully blended folk traditions with modern melodies while maintaining the cultural identity of Assam. His songs have been performed by several noted Assamese singers and continue to inspire music lovers.
