Early Life and Education
Biren Borkotoki was born on 23 March 1924 at Bagalibari in present-day Sonitpur district of Assam. He completed his early schooling at Chatiya and passed the Entrance Examination in 1942. His academic journey later took him to Banaras Hindu University, where he completed his graduation in 1949. He subsequently pursued higher studies in Assamese and obtained a Master's degree from Gauhati University in 1953. Freedom Movement
Biren Borkotoki was associated with India's freedom movement and participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942. His involvement in the national movement resulted in imprisonment. Borkotoki began his teaching career as an Assistant Headmaster at Jamuguri High School. His professional life later expanded into higher education and literary journalism. He served as a teacher of Assamese and eventually became Principal of Sivasagar Girls' College. He served as Principal of the institution from 1 July 1971 to 28 February 1985, making a lasting contribution to education in Sivasagar.
His career also included a strong connection with journalism. In 1943, he worked as an Assistant Editor of the daily Sadiniya Asomiya Kakot. He subsequently contributed to newspapers including Dainik Asomiya, Nutan Asomiya and Dainik Asom. He was also associated with the literary magazine Ramdhenu. These experiences strengthened his understanding of contemporary Assamese society and provided another platform for his literary and intellectual activities.
Literary Career
Biren Borkotoki was a progressive writer whose literary interests extended across several genres. Although he was known as a poet, his reputation also rests on his novels, critical writings, translations and other literary works. His writing reflected an interest in society, human life, culture and changing ideas.
His poetry collections include Manbantar, Chirantan and Chinaki Prithibi. These works established his place among Assamese literary figures of his generation. His novels include Bhorolir Pare Pare, Pitamah and Mrityu Gachaki Ana Jayajini. He also wrote critical and analytical works such as Pashchatya Sahityat Ebumuki, Sahityar Potbhumi and Sahitya-Sanskritir Duti Eti.
