Ratan Lahkar was born in 1940 in Rampur village near Pathsala in the present-day Barpeta district of Assam. He developed a deep interest in acting during childhood and first appeared on stage at the age of nine. During his school and college years, he regularly participated in theatrical performances organized by local cultural groups and educational institutions. His passion for drama gradually became his life's mission.
He began his primary education at Rampur LP School before completing higher studies at Bajali College. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Cotton College, Guwahati. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Saugor (now Dr. Hari Singh Gour University), Madhya Pradesh, where he completed his Master's degree in Political Science. Although academically qualified for other professions, his love for theatre inspired him to choose acting as a full-time career.
Ratan Lahkar started his professional theatre journey with Purbajyoti Theatre under the guidance of noted theatre personalities. His outstanding acting abilities quickly earned him recognition, especially for his versatility in portraying both comic and serious roles. His performances established him as one of the most talented actors in Assamese mobile theatre during the 1960s and early 1970s.
In 1976, he founded Kohinoor Theatre along with Krishna Roy. Under his visionary leadership, Kohinoor Theatre became one of the most successful and influential mobile theatre companies in Assam. He introduced several revolutionary changes that completely transformed the presentation of stage productions. Advanced lighting, elaborate stage sets, special visual effects, realistic props, innovative costumes, and technically sophisticated performances became the identity of Kohinoor Theatre.
One of his biggest achievements was introducing double acting and triple acting on the same stage, allowing a single actor to portray multiple characters in one production. He also experimented with unusual casting techniques and innovative stage illusions that amazed audiences. His productions demonstrated that Assamese mobile theatre could successfully present technically demanding stories without compromising artistic quality.
Ratan Lahkar expanded the scope of Assamese theatre by adapting famous international literary works and historical epics. His productions included adaptations inspired by Shakespeare, Sophocles, Dostoevsky, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Hamlet, Cleopatra, Ben Hur and Titanic, while simultaneously encouraging the production of original Assamese plays. His adaptation of Titanic became one of the biggest commercial successes in the history of Assamese mobile theatre, featuring an impressive replica of the famous ship and spectacular visual effects on stage.
Apart from introducing technical excellence, Lahkar played a major role in bringing Assamese literature closer to mobile theatre. He collaborated with many renowned Assamese playwrights and encouraged respected writers to create original scripts specifically for mobile theatre. This significantly improved the literary quality of stage productions while attracting educated audiences who had previously shown little interest in Bhramyaman theatre.
He also promoted many talented actors, directors, playwrights and technicians who later became leading figures in Assamese theatre and cinema. His leadership, discipline and commitment to excellence inspired generations of theatre professionals. Under his guidance, Kohinoor Theatre became the first Assamese mobile theatre troupe to perform at the National School of Drama festival in New Delhi in 2010, introducing this unique theatrical tradition to a national audience.
Besides theatre, Ratan Lahkar briefly entered politics by contesting the 2006 Assam Assembly election from the Patacharkuchi constituency as an independent candidate, although he was not elected. He also acted in the Assamese film Samiran Barua Ahi Ase in 2012, marking his only appearance in cinema.
