Early Life
Ghanakanta Bora Borbayan was born in 1950 in Majuli, Assam, the world's largest inhabited river island and the spiritual center of Neo-Vaishnavite culture established by Srimanta Sankardeva. At the age of four, he entered the historic Kamalabari Sattra, where he began his spiritual and artistic journey. From an early age, he showed exceptional talent in dance, music, and traditional performing arts.
Training and Education
His formal training started under the guidance of legendary Sattriya guru Maniram Dutta Muktiyar Barbayan, who introduced him to the discipline of Sattriya dance and devotional music. He later received advanced instruction from Raseswar Saikia Barbayan, mastering Sattriya dance, Khol (traditional drum), Bayan, Natya, and Ojapali. Due to his extraordinary skill and dedication, he was awarded the respected title of Barbayan at a young age, a distinction reserved for highly accomplished performers within the Sattra tradition.
Career
Ghanakanta Bora Borbayan started his professional career as a teacher at Kamalabari Sattra, where he trained young disciples in traditional dance and music. His reputation as an accomplished guru soon led to teaching assignments at several prestigious institutions.
In 1971, he joined Bishnupur Kala Kendra in Shillong as a Sattriya dance instructor. A few years later, he became associated with the Sankardeva Cultural Institute in New Delhi, helping introduce Assam's classical heritage to a national audience. After returning to Assam, he joined Sangeet Sattra in Guwahati and later became a faculty member of the Government State College of Music, Assam, eventually heading the Department of Sattriya Music and Dance.
In 1987, he established Sattriya Kala Kendra in Guwahati, an institution dedicated to preserving and teaching authentic Sattriya dance. Under his guidance, the institute has trained hundreds of students from India and abroad. He also helped establish more than 25 Sattriya training centres across Assam, greatly expanding opportunities for young learners.
