He was born on 4 November 1931 in Radhabari of Karimganj district, Assam, though his ancestral roots were connected to Moran in present-day Dibrugarh district. His father, Trailokya Nath Gogoi, served in the Indian Army, and his mother, Jeutara Gogoi, was a homemaker. He received his primary education in Moran and completed his matriculation from Dibrugarh Government High School in 1947.
After higher studies at Ripon College in Calcutta, he pursued medical education at Assam Medical College and later obtained his MBBS degree from RG Kar Medical College under the University of Calcutta in 1956. He completed his Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1959 and then went to London for advanced training, where he earned the MRCOG qualification in 1962.
Dr. Gogoi joined Gauhati Medical College in November 1962 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He became Professor in 1964 and was appointed Head of the Department in 1973, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Under his leadership, the department witnessed major technological and academic advancements. He was instrumental in introducing one of the earliest ultrasound facilities in a government medical college in the region and helped establish advanced reproductive and hormonal research facilities in collaboration with national research bodies.
He was also known for innovation in surgical practice and research. His work on complex vesico-vaginal fistula repair and other gynecological procedures received national and international attention. He presented scientific papers at global conferences and encouraged research among postgraduate students and young doctors.
Dr. Mukti Prasad Gogoi held several prestigious professional positions. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London (FRCOG), Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), and Fellow of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He served as examiner for many Indian universities and also participated in professional activities of international medical institutions.
He played a major role in strengthening academic collaboration among doctors of the Northeast and was the founder of the North Eastern Obstetrics & Gynaecological Societies Conference (NEOGSCON), which continues to serve as an important platform for medical exchange in the region.
Apart from medicine, Dr. Gogoi was a passionate writer. After retirement, he devoted considerable time to Assamese literature and published essays, short stories, memoirs, and books that reflected his experiences, humour, observations on society, and deep love for Assamese culture and cuisine. His book Pan-Bhojan became particularly popular for its engaging portrayal of traditional Assamese food habits and culinary heritage.
Among his notable literary works are Pan-Bhojan, Xexhnohuwa Xapon Bor Aru Onanyo Probondho, Bogibaideor Biya, Bronmai, Konmai, and Himalayot Uthaa Aru Onanyo Probondho. These writings established him as a respected literary voice beyond his medical achievements.
He received several honours during his lifetime. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1984. He was later honoured with the FOGSI Lifetime Achievement Award and was recognized by various academic and cultural organizations for his contribution to medicine, education, and Assamese literature.
Dr. Mukti Prasad Gogoi passed away on 24 April 2021 at the age of 89. He is remembered not only as a pioneering doctor and visionary teacher, but also as a compassionate human being, researcher, mentor, and writer who enriched both the medical and cultural life of Assam.
