Born in Assam, Dr. Mathura Nath Bhattacharyya displayed exceptional academic brilliance from an early stage of his medical career. He achieved the rare distinction of securing Honours in MBBS and Distinction in MD, accomplishments considered extraordinary during that period. His passion for learning and deep understanding of medicine helped him become one of the most distinguished physicians produced by Assam Medical College.
Dr. Bhattacharyya was among the earliest doctors from Assam to receive the prestigious MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) from the United Kingdom. He later earned the highly respected FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians), becoming one of the pioneering medical professionals from the region to achieve these internationally acclaimed qualifications.
As a Professor of Medicine at Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, he played a defining role in shaping medical education in Northeast India. Thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students benefited from his systematic teaching methods, clinical expertise, and emphasis on accurate diagnosis. Dr. Bhattacharyya was married to Saraswati Devi, who collaborated with him academically by co-authoring the book Griha Bigyan (Home Science), published by the Dibrugarh University Coordination Committee in 1973.
