Early Life
Tafazzul Ali was born on 16 October 1929 at Bhutiyachang Tea Estate in the present-day Darrang district of Assam. He grew up in Nagarbahi village near Mangaldai in a family that valued education and music. His father, Mahbub Ali, was both a physician and a talented singer, while his mother was Chadia Khatoon. The musical atmosphere at home inspired Tafazzul Ali to develop an interest in literature and music from an early age.
Education
He received his early education in Nagarbahi village and later attended Tongla Chatgari Majalia School. In 1949, he passed the matriculation examination from Mangaldai English School. He completed his Intermediate from Cotton College in 1951 with first division and earned an Honours degree in Assamese Literature from the same institution in 1953. He later obtained his Master's degree in Assamese from Gauhati University in 1955.
Musical Journey and Literary Career
Tafazzul Ali received his first formal musical training from his father before learning under renowned musicians including Ustad Bashir Ahmad, Guru Shil, and Khagendra Nath Das. His talent was recognized at a young age when he was selected as a radio artist for All India Radio Guwahati in 1948.
While studying at Cotton College, he became associated with leading musicians of Assam and gradually established himself as a gifted lyricist. His lyrics combined poetic beauty with emotional depth, making many Assamese songs timeless classics. He also worked as a music director in several Assamese films and contributed significantly to the growth of Assamese cinema.
Apart from music, Tafazzul Ali enjoyed a distinguished academic career. He joined Hanumanbux Kanoi College, Dibrugarh, as a lecturer in the Assamese Department and later became a senior professor at Gauhati Commerce College. Thousands of students benefited from his knowledge of Assamese language and literature.
He also edited "Sangam," regarded as one of the earliest Assamese monthly digest magazines published from Dibrugarh. Throughout his career, he remained actively involved in literary, theatrical, and cultural organizations across Assam.

Personal Life
In 1962, Tafazzul Ali married Zahura Ali. Along with his academic career, he remained devoted to promoting Assamese music, literature, theatre, and cultural heritage throughout his life.

Tafazzul Ali passed away on 6 July 2008 in Guwahati. His contribution to Assamese music, education, and literature continues to inspire generations of artists, writers, students, and cultural enthusiasts. His songs, books, and dramatic works remain valuable assets of Assam's rich cultural legacy.
