Early Life
Nagen Saikia was born on 11 February 1939 in Hatiakhowa village of Golaghat district, Assam. He was born to Umaram Saikia and Hemaprabha Saikia. Raised in a culturally rich environment, he developed an interest in Assamese language, books and storytelling from an early age. His disciplined upbringing and passion for education laid the foundation for an outstanding literary and academic career.
Education
He completed his primary education at Borkathoni L.P. School before studying at Kakodonga M.E. School and Dhekial Higher Secondary School. He passed his Higher Secondary examination from Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat, and graduated from Debraj Roy College, Golaghat. He later obtained a Master's degree in Assamese from Gauhati University in 1964. In 1982, he earned a Ph.D. from Dibrugarh University with research focusing on the social and intellectual background of modern Assamese literature.
Academic and Professional Career
Nagen Saikia began his professional journey as a school teacher before entering higher education. He taught at several institutions including Diphu Government College, Jorhat College and Devicharan Barua Girls' College. In 1972, he joined the Department of Assamese at Dibrugarh University, where he served as a lecturer, professor and later held the prestigious Lakshminath Bezbaroa Chair. His teaching career inspired countless students and researchers, while his scholarly guidance strengthened Assamese literary studies across universities.
Apart from academics, he also worked in journalism as Assistant Editor of Asom Batori and later served as Editor of Natun Dainik, Amar Asom and several respected literary magazines. His editorial leadership helped maintain high standards in Assamese publishing and encouraged emerging writers.
