Early Life
Hiren Bhattacharya was born on 28 July 1932 in Jorhat, Assam, to Tirthanath Bhattacharya and Snehalata Bhattacharya. His father served as a jailer, resulting in frequent transfers across different parts of Assam. As a result, Hiren spent his childhood in places such as Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Mangaldoi, Golaghat and Guwahati. These experiences exposed him to diverse cultures, landscapes and people, all of which later became recurring inspirations in his poetry.
His love for literature began at an early age, and he gradually developed a unique poetic voice that celebrated ordinary life with extraordinary warmth and sensitivity.
Education
Hiren Bhattacharya began his education at Graham Bazar M.E. School in Dibrugarh before continuing his studies in Tezpur and several other towns due to his father's transfers. He completed his High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination from Cotton Collegiate School in Guwahati in 1945 and later joined B. Borooah College for higher education. His passion for literature grew during his student years, laying the foundation for a lifelong literary career.
Literary Career
Hiren Bhattacharya devoted his life to Assamese poetry and became one of its most influential modern poets. His poems are admired for their simplicity, optimism, romance and philosophical depth.
