Jayanta Baruah was born on 9 August 1959 in Assam. He belongs to the distinguished family of Hemchandra Baruah, the renowned Assamese scholar who compiled Hemkosh, the first etymological dictionary of the Assamese language. Inspired by this rich literary legacy, he dedicated his career to the development of Assamese language, culture, and media.
He completed his early education in different schools across Assam due to his father's transferable government service. He later studied Science at B. Borooah College and completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Gauhati University. During his youth, he actively participated in social and student movements before entering the media industry.
In 1988, Jayanta Baruah established the Sadin-Pratidin Group with the vision of creating a strong independent Assamese media organization. The weekly newspaper Sadin was launched in 1989 and quickly became popular for its analytical reporting and socio-political coverage. In 1995, the group introduced Asomiya Pratidin, which later became one of Assam's highest circulated Assamese newspapers. Apart from media management, Jayanta Baruah has consistently worked for the promotion of Assamese language and literature.
