Early Life
Rebati Mohan Dutta Choudhury was born on 11 February 1924 in Gauripur, located in the present-day Dhubri district of Assam. He grew up in an environment that valued education and literature, which greatly influenced his intellectual development from an early age. His curiosity, analytical thinking, and interest in reading gradually shaped his future career as both a scholar and a celebrated writer.
Education
He completed his graduation from Carmichael College, Rangpur, now located in Bangladesh. Later, he pursued higher studies in Pure Mathematics at the University of Calcutta, where he obtained his postgraduate degree in 1946 with First Class distinction and a Silver Medal. His academic excellence reflected his sharp analytical abilities, which later became evident in his literary works as well.
Career
Rebati Mohan Dutta Choudhury began his professional career as a lecturer in Mathematics at Cotton College, Guwahati. During different phases of his life, he also worked as a contractor, sub-editor of The Assam Tribune, and assistant manager of a tea estate. Eventually, he returned to academics by joining Assam Engineering College in 1957 as a Mathematics lecturer. He continued serving the institution for many years and retired in 1982 as a Professor of Mathematics. Alongside his academic responsibilities, he consistently contributed to Assamese literature under the pen name Sheelabhadra.
Literary Contributions
Sheelabhadra became one of the leading literary voices of post-independence Assam. His novels and short stories portrayed realistic situations, complex human relationships, social transformation, ethical dilemmas, and philosophical reflections. His writing style was thoughtful, emotionally engaging, and intellectually rich while remaining accessible to readers.
His stories often focused on changing Assamese society, the conflict between tradition and modernity, human values, loneliness, identity, and the psychological dimensions of everyday life.
