Hiren Gohain was born in 1939 in Golaghat, Assam, into a family that valued education and learning. His father, Mahendranath Gohain, was an eminent educationist who served as an Inspector of Schools and later became the Principal of Arya Vidyapeeth. His mother, Saratkumari Gohain, also encouraged academic excellence. Growing up in such an environment helped shape his lifelong interest in literature, philosophy, and social issues.
An outstanding student throughout his academic life, Hiren Gohain completed his matriculation from Cotton Collegiate Government Higher Secondary School, Guwahati, in 1955, securing second position in the university with the highest marks in English and Assamese. He completed his Intermediate from Cotton College before earning a Bachelor's degree with Honours in English Literature from Presidency College, Calcutta. He later obtained a Master's degree in English from the University of Delhi, where he secured first position. His academic journey culminated with a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge under the guidance of renowned literary scholar Christopher Morris, specialising in the works of John Milton.
After completing his education, Hiren Gohain began a distinguished academic career. He taught English literature at Dibrugarh University before joining Gauhati University, where he eventually became Professor and Head of the Department of English. Through decades of teaching, he inspired countless students and established himself as one of Assam's finest educationists before retiring from university service.
Alongside academics, Hiren Gohain built an extraordinary literary career. His writings cover literary criticism, Assamese identity, philosophy, history, politics, culture, social change, and contemporary issues. He introduced fresh perspectives to Assamese literary criticism by combining classical literary scholarship with modern analytical approaches. His books have become valuable references for students, researchers, and readers interested in Assamese literature and intellectual history.
Some of his most acclaimed Assamese works include Sahityar Satya, Samaj aru Samalochana, Bastavar Swapna, Kal Bhramar, Kirtan Puthir Ras-Bichar, Asomiya Jatiya Jibanat Mahapurusiya Parampara, Anchalikatabad aru Asom, Uttaranar Sadhana, Nirbachita Samalochana, Shankardev Sandarshan, Porompara aru Adhunikata, Chalachitra aru Bastabata, and several autobiographical works including Iman Tita Sagarar Pani, Hengul Akash, Kola Cycle aru Ejon Arohi, Botahat Kor Godhuli Gopal, and Soponor Dikchau Bonot. His important English publications include Tradition and Paradise Lost, Assam: A Burning Question, Nature and Art in Shakespeare, The Magic Plant, Aspects of Early Nineteenth Century Bengalee Culture, and Struggling in a Time Warp.
Apart from writing books, Hiren Gohain has served as editor of several Assamese journals and literary magazines, including Nutan Prithivi, Padatik, Kalakhar, and Sanket. He has also contributed articles to leading national publications such as Economic and Political Weekly, Frontier, Mainstream, and The Telegraph. His essays frequently explore democracy, secularism, social justice, language, culture, and the future of Assamese society.
Hiren Gohain has actively participated in public discussions on political and social issues throughout his life. Known for expressing independent opinions, he has consistently defended democratic values, freedom of expression, and cultural diversity. His writings continue to stimulate debate and intellectual discussion across Assam and India.
For his outstanding contribution to literature, Hiren Gohain received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989 for his book Asomiya Jatiya Jibanat Mahapurusiya Parampara. He has also been honoured with the Kamal Kumari National Award and several other literary recognitions for his immense contribution to Assamese literature and criticism.
Today, Hiren Gohain remains one of the foremost literary personalities of Assam. His remarkable scholarship, influential writings, and lifelong commitment to literature, education, and public discourse have secured his place among the greatest intellectuals in the history of Assamese literature.
