Born and raised in Assam, Dr. Sarma developed a deep affection for elephants during his childhood. His family's close association with a female elephant named Lakshmi inspired him to dedicate his life to animal welfare. This early connection shaped his passion for wildlife conservation and motivated him to pursue veterinary science as a profession.
After completing his veterinary education, Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma joined the College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara, Guwahati. Over the years, he became Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery and Radiology, where he combined academic excellence with extensive fieldwork. His research, teaching, and clinical expertise have helped train several generations of veterinarians while significantly advancing wildlife medicine in Northeast India.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sarma has specialised in treating both captive and wild Asian elephants. He has successfully treated more than 10,000 elephants and continues to handle approximately 700 to 800 elephant-related cases every year. His work includes emergency surgeries, disease management, rehabilitation, tranquilisation, translocation, and rescue operations involving injured or rogue elephants. He has also pioneered the safe use of remote tranquilising techniques for elephants in Northeast India, making rescue operations safer for both animals and people.
One of Dr. Sarma's most significant contributions has been reducing human-elephant conflict across Assam and neighbouring states. Instead of relying solely on reactive measures, he has consistently promoted scientific conservation practices and community participation. He advocates eco-friendly solutions such as bio-fencing using thorny bamboo and cultivation of Bhut Jolokia around farmlands to reduce elephant incursions without harming wildlife. His conservation philosophy emphasises peaceful coexistence between humans and elephants while protecting biodiversity.
Apart from treating wildlife, Dr. Sarma has actively participated in elephant conservation research, wildlife rescue missions, veterinary education, and awareness programmes. He has collaborated with government agencies, forest departments, conservation organisations, and international wildlife experts to improve elephant healthcare and conservation strategies throughout India. His work has significantly contributed to protecting one of the world's most endangered elephant populations.
Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma's extraordinary service has received widespread national and international recognition. In 2020, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation. He has also received the Balipara Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong dedication to elephant conservation. In addition, the Humane Society of the United States recognised his contribution to global animal welfare with a special commemorative honour. These awards reflect his immense impact on wildlife healthcare and conservation.
Beyond awards, Dr. Sarma continues to inspire young veterinarians, wildlife researchers, and conservationists through his fieldwork, academic leadership, and public awareness initiatives.
