Early Life
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha was born as Surendra Nath Medhi in Mangaldoi, Darrang district, Assam, in 1930. His parents were Kaliram Medhi and Swarnalata Medhi. He completed his early education at St. Mary's Convent School in Guwahati before studying at Cotton Collegiate School. From an early age, he displayed exceptional academic ability as well as a keen interest in literature.
Education
After completing his schooling, he joined Cotton College and secured excellent academic results in the Intermediate Science examination. He later earned a Bachelor's degree with Honours in Physics. During his student years, he became involved in political activities and was imprisoned for a period, yet successfully completed his examinations. He subsequently pursued higher studies in England and obtained a Master's degree in Physics from the University of London. He also spent time in Germany, gaining teaching and research experience before returning to India.
Academic Career
In 1960, Surendra Nath Medhi joined Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, as a Professor of Physics. Over the years, he became Head of the Physics Department and earned immense respect as an educator. He voluntarily retired in 1988 after a distinguished teaching career. His scientific background significantly influenced his literary works, giving them a unique intellectual depth rarely found in Assamese fiction.
Literary Career
Writing under the pseudonym Saurabh Kumar Chaliha, he emerged as one of the leading voices of modern Assamese literature. His breakthrough story, Ashanta Electron, introduced an entirely new style of storytelling characterized by psychological insight, symbolic narration, and experimental techniques. His writings portrayed the complexities of urban life, scientific thinking, loneliness, human relationships, and changing social values.
Unlike many contemporary writers, Chaliha maintained complete anonymity for much of his life and rarely appeared in public. He believed that literature should speak for itself rather than the personality of the author. His works have been translated into English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Telugu, and several other Indian languages, helping Assamese literature reach a wider audience.
