Born on 14 March 1934 in Nazira of present-day Sivasagar district, Assam, Eli Ahmed grew up in a culturally rich family. Her father, Dr. Abdur Rashid, was a renowned surgeon. She lost her mother during childhood, an experience that influenced her compassionate outlook towards society. From an early age she showed exceptional interest in poetry, storytelling, music, and literature. Her creative talent gradually developed into a lifelong mission of using literature as a tool for social change.
Although detailed records of her formal higher education are limited, Eli Ahmed established herself through continuous learning, creativity, and dedication. She began writing poems, children's stories, essays, and articles while still young and later expanded her work into novels, plays, screenplays, film songs, journalism, and social commentary.
One of her most important contributions came in 1970 when she founded "Orani", the only women's magazine of Northeast India. As its editor, publisher, and proprietor, she transformed the magazine into an influential platform for women's voices, education, literature, social awareness, and cultural development. For more than five decades, Orani has inspired generations of readers and writers across Assam and the Northeast. Because of her long association with the publication, she is affectionately known as "Orani Baideo."
Eli Ahmed also made remarkable contributions to Assamese cinema and theatre. She wrote scripts, lyrics, dialogues, costumes, and creative content for numerous Assamese films and television serials. Her memorable songs, including "Ga Ga Aji Gai Jaa Ei Geetoke Ga" from the classic Assamese film Dr. Bezbarua, established her as a talented lyricist. She also scripted films such as Dhrubatora, Janambhumi, Devata, Bonphool, Rickshawala, Mukhagni, Jakhini, and several documentary films highlighting Assam's history, culture, education, and archaeology.
As a dramatist, she addressed important social issues through her plays. Her widely acclaimed drama "Ami Abhinoy Kora Nai" focused on the lives of physically challenged children, child labour, and the importance of education. She also formed Assam's first women's drama group and later established the children's cultural organisation "Rong Chora," encouraging young artists and promoting cultural values throughout the state.
Apart from literature and performing arts, Eli Ahmed has always been an active advocate for women's rights, child welfare, adult education, and social reform. Her writings frequently highlight gender equality, education for girls, rural development, and preservation of Assamese identity. She has written more than one thousand poems, articles, stories, and essays for newspapers and magazines, making her one of the most prolific literary personalities in Assam.

In recognition of her lifelong contribution to literature and education, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri in 2017.
