Early Life
Khagen Mahanta was born on 17 August 1942 at Aamtala Gajala Satra near Jajori Borguri in present-day Nagaon district, Assam. He was born to Harendranath Mahanta and Lakshmipriya Devi in a culturally rich environment closely associated with the Vaishnavite traditions established by Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhabdev. His childhood was surrounded by devotional music, folk traditions, and the vibrant cultural heritage of Assam, which inspired his lifelong passion for music.
Education
Khagen Mahanta completed his matriculation from Nagaon Government High School in 1957. He later joined St. Edmund's College, Shillong, for higher studies before continuing his education at Nagaon College and Gauhati University. Although he pursued English and History, his growing dedication to music eventually led him to devote himself entirely to his artistic career.
Musical Career
Khagen Mahanta displayed extraordinary musical talent from an early age. By the age of fifteen, he had already begun performing at concerts in Shillong, where his remarkable voice attracted widespread appreciation. In 1959, he won a Gold Medal at the Inter-University Youth Festival for his performance on the traditional Assamese drum, the Khol, bringing him national recognition.
His first recorded Assamese song was broadcast by All India Radio Guwahati in 1961, marking the beginning of a remarkable musical journey. He later participated in the World Peace Festival in Kolkata and represented India during a cultural exchange programme in Nepal in 1965.
During the Assamese Language Movement of 1960, Khagen Mahanta actively participated alongside eminent cultural personalities such as Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Hemanga Biswas, and Jugal Das. As a member of the Harmony cultural group, he used music to inspire unity, cultural pride, and social harmony.
In 1976, he joined All India Radio Guwahati as a Music Director and was promoted as Music Composer in 1986. Throughout his career, he contributed to numerous forms of Assamese music, including Bihu songs, Borgeet, Lok Geet, Tokari Geet, Biya Naam, devotional music, musical dramas, and traditional folk compositions.
Marriage and Family
Khagen Mahanta married renowned Assamese folk singer Archana Mahanta in 1973. Together they became one of Assam's most celebrated musical couples, performing throughout India and introducing Assamese folk traditions to wider audiences. Their son Angaraag Mahanta, popularly known as Papon, has established himself as one of India's leading playback singers and composers. Their daughter, Kingkini Mahanta, also belongs to this respected musical family.
