Early Life
Adil Hussain was born on 5 October 1963 in Goalpara, Assam, into an Assamese Muslim family. He was the youngest of seven children. His father served as the headmaster of a higher secondary school before later working as a Muslim marriage registrar. Growing up in a modest household, Adil experienced financial hardships but was surrounded by a rich cultural and intellectual environment that nurtured his love for literature, music and performing arts.
His family has a unique multicultural background. His maternal grandfather was of Iraqi origin, while his maternal grandmother had Assamese, English and Italian ancestry. This diverse heritage greatly influenced his artistic outlook and helped shape his broad understanding of different cultures.
From an early age, Adil displayed exceptional talent in acting, mimicry and stage performance. He frequently participated in school plays, imitated famous Bollywood actors and entertained family and friends with his performances.
Education
After completing his schooling, Adil joined B. Borooah College in Guwahati, where he studied Philosophy. During college, his interest in theatre became stronger and he actively participated in dramatic productions.
Determined to pursue acting professionally, he enrolled at the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, where he studied from 1990 to 1993 under several renowned theatre personalities. Later, he received the prestigious Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship to study at Drama Studio London, where he further refined his acting techniques through international theatre training.
Theatre Career
Before becoming a film actor, Adil Hussain spent several years performing in Assamese mobile theatre, one of the state's most popular cultural traditions. He also worked as a stand-up comedian with the famous Bhaya Mama Group, entertaining audiences through comedy and mimicry.
Following his return from London, he continued working in theatre and trained under distinguished theatre directors including Khalid Tyabji, Swapan Bose and Dilip Shankar. His breakthrough stage performance came in Othello: A Play in Black and White, directed by Roysten Abel, which won the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe First Award.
Adil later served as Artistic Director and Trainer at the Society for Artists and Performers in Hampi between 2004 and 2007. He has also worked as a visiting faculty member at the National School of Drama, Royal Conservatory of Performing Arts in The Hague, Drama School Amsterdam and Film and Television Institute of India, mentoring young actors.
Film Career
Adil Hussain began his acting career with Assamese films during the 1980s before gradually entering Bengali, Hindi and English cinema.
His early films included Xongkolpo, Sutrapaat, Pita Putra and Bhai Bhai. His Bengali debut came with Iti Srikanta in 2004.
He gained nationwide recognition through Ishqiya (2010), where his outstanding performance established him as a serious actor in Bollywood.
