What Makes Bellevue Point Special?
The main attraction of Bellevue Point is its impressive view of the Brahmaputra, one of India's most important river systems. From the riverside, visitors can admire the broad waterway, distant green landscapes and views towards Umananda Island, depending on visibility and river conditions. The changing colours of the sky create a particularly attractive setting around sunrise and sunset, making the viewpoint suitable for photography and a short outdoor break.
The atmosphere is generally more relaxed than that of Guwahati's busy commercial areas. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk, pause to appreciate the river or spend some time watching boats and the movement of water. Families may also find the surrounding recreational spaces appealing, although available facilities can vary. Tea stalls and food outlets in the wider Uzan Bazar area provide options for refreshments before or after a visit.
History Behind the Name
Bellevue Point takes its name from the former Hotel Bellevue, a well-known establishment associated with the area's earlier social and hospitality scene. The hotel was remembered as a landmark in Guwahati and served visitors, including airline crew members, over the years. It was later acquired and demolished to facilitate the expansion of the nearby Raj Bhavan complex. Although the hotel is no longer there, its name continues to be associated with this scenic riverside location.
Location and How to Reach
Bellevue Point is situated on MG Road in Uzan Bazar, Guwahati, Assam, PIN 781001. Visitors can reach the area by taxi, auto-rickshaw or other local transport from major parts of the city. Parking close to the viewpoint is limited, and vehicles may be stopped at security checkpoints because of the nearby Governor's residence. Depending on the prevailing arrangements, visitors may need to park farther away and walk.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning is a good choice for a peaceful atmosphere, while late afternoon offers pleasant light for sunset photography. A visit of around 30 to 45 minutes is generally sufficient for enjoying the scenery. The viewpoint is commonly described as free to access, but entry and vehicle restrictions may change.
Since Bellevue Point is close to a sensitive government complex, follow instructions from security personnel and check local access conditions before visiting. Do not assume that vehicles or crowds will always be permitted. Nearby attractions such as the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre and Dighali Pukhuri can be included in the same Guwahati sightseeing plan.
