Early Life
Tarun Gogoi was born on 1 April 1936 at Rangajan Tea Estate in present-day Jorhat district, Assam, into a Tai Ahom family. His father, Dr. Kamaleswar Gogoi, was a respected medical practitioner, while his mother, Usha Gogoi, encouraged education and social values. Growing up in a disciplined environment, he developed a strong interest in public affairs, law, and politics from an early age.
Education
Tarun Gogoi completed his early education at several schools in Assam before passing the HSLC examination from Jorhat Government High School. He graduated from Jagannath Barooah College and later earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Gauhati University. After completing his legal studies, he briefly practiced as an advocate before entering active politics.
Political Career
Tarun Gogoi began his political journey in 1968 as a member of the Jorhat Municipal Board. His organizational skills and leadership soon earned him important responsibilities within the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1971 from Jorhat and subsequently represented both Jorhat and Kaliabor constituencies over six parliamentary terms.
During his national political career, he served as Joint Secretary and later General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Between 1993 and 1995, he served as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Food Processing Industries in the Government of India under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao.
In 2001, Tarun Gogoi became the 13th Chief Minister of Assam after leading the Congress party to victory. He remained Chief Minister for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2016, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister in Assam's history.
