Early Life
Bhumidhar Barman was born on 12 October 1931 in Belsor, Nalbari district, Assam, to Bhakat Ram Barman and Mathupriya Barman. His father was a respected businessman in the region who encouraged education and community service. He completed his matriculation from Tihu High School in 1951 before studying at Cotton College, Guwahati. Bhumidhar Barman entered active politics by joining the Indian National Congress in 1967. In the same year, he was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the West Nalbari constituency. Throughout his political journey, he represented different constituencies, including Dharmapur and Barkhetry, and was elected as an MLA seven times.
Over the years, Dr. Barman handled several important ministerial portfolios and became known for his administrative efficiency and balanced leadership. Following the death of Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia in April 1996, he was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the state as Chief Minister. Although his tenure lasted only 22 days, it remains an important chapter in Assam's political history because he ensured administrative continuity during a challenging transition period.
In 2010, while Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi underwent heart surgery, Bhumidhar Barman once again assumed the responsibility of Acting Chief Minister.
