The ashram was established by Swami Nigamananda on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya in 1319 B.S., corresponding to 1912. It was founded with a broader spiritual and social vision that included the propagation of Sanatana Dharma, the promotion of meaningful education and selfless service to people. Over time, the institution developed into an important centre associated with Nigamananda's spiritual teachings and the Saraswata tradition.
The history of Shanti Ashram is connected with Nigamananda's earlier efforts to establish spiritual and service-oriented institutions. Before the centre was established at Kokilamukh, his ashram activities had taken place at other locations. Land was subsequently acquired at Kumarveti Chapri village near Kokilamukh, where the present spiritual centre was developed.
Nigamananda also initiated disciples into monastic life at the institution, strengthening its role as a centre for spiritual practice and learning. The ashram later became known as Saraswata Matha and is also referred to as Assam Bangiya Saraswat Matha. Religious and spiritual literature connected with the Saraswata tradition has also been associated with the institution.
