The sanctuary was officially notified by the Government of Assam on 27 July 2000 and forms a crucial part of the Kaziranga Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve.

Nestled within the Eastern Himalayan foothills and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary features tropical semi-evergreen forests, pockets of pure evergreen forests, marshes, bamboo groves, rivers, streams, and hot water springs. The sanctuary is named after the Nambor River, which flows through its lush terrain. The altitude ranges between 200 and 1000 meters above sea level, and the region receives heavy monsoon rainfall with annual precipitation ranging from 120 cm to nearly 2500 mm. Temperatures remain moderate throughout the year, ranging from 8 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius.

The sanctuary is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife. Mammals commonly found here include Asian elephants, Royal Bengal tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, barking deer, swamp deer, hog deer, wild pig, golden langur, hoolock gibbon, rhesus macaque, pig-tailed macaque, slow loris, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, honey bear, wild dog, jackal, civet cat, otter, porcupine, flying squirrel, mongoose, ant eater, bats and fishing cat. The extensive bamboo cover serves as a vital food source for elephants.

Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary is also a paradise for bird watchers and ornithologists. The forest supports a rich population of terrestrial woodland birds such as Great Pied Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Hill Myna, Imperial Pigeon, Green Pigeon, White-winged Wood Duck, Adjutant Stork, Jungle Fowl, Pheasant, Quail, Whistling Teal, Cotton Teal, Plovers, Hawks, Magpies, Parrots, Racket-tailed Drongo, Rock Dove and King Crow. Reptiles like python, king cobra, monitor lizard and tortoise are also found here, along with diverse insects, butterflies and moths. The sanctuary is further enriched by rare orchids, ferns, climbers and timber species such as Ajar, Gomari, Bhelu, Nahor, Poma, Udiyam and Bon Som.
