Detailed Notes
Unlike conventional art schools, Basundhara Kala Niketan promotes a relaxed and natural learning environment where students are encouraged to develop their artistic skills through imagination, observation and practical experience rather than following rigid classroom routines.
The establishment of Basundhara Kala Niketan marked a significant milestone in the history of fine arts education in Assam. Along with founding the school, Neel Pawan Baruah also established the Assam Charu-Karu Kala Parishad (Assam Fine Arts & Craft Society) in 1971 to promote visual arts and provide a platform for artists across the state. Over the years, the institution has become an important centre for art education, exhibitions, cultural activities and community events, inspiring generations of young artists.
It is important to note that Jibeswar Baruah played a pioneering role in organized art education in Assam by starting the region's first formal art school in a single room at Don Bosco School, Guwahati, in 1947. That initiative was later provincialized and eventually developed into the Government College of Art & Crafts. However, Basundhara Kala Niketan remains the first privately established art school in Assam, making it a landmark institution in the state's artistic and cultural history.
