According to local traditions, the shrine has a history of several centuries and is associated with the belief that a part of Goddess Sati fell at this sacred location. The temple's origin is linked with Zamindar Prithiram Choudhury of Meshpara. Local accounts state that after learning about the presence of the sacred site, he eventually decided to establish the temple following a divine experience in a dream. The temple was later affected by a major earthquake in the 17th century and was reconstructed.
The shrine is particularly interesting for its traditional form of worship and its connection with local customs. The surrounding area has historically had a significant tribal population, and indigenous traditions have also influenced religious practices at the site. A Shiva temple is located close to the main Joybhum Kamakhya shrine, adding another important spiritual element to the temple complex.
