Dibru Saikhowa National Park, spread across 650 square kilometers, is one of the largest protected areas in Assam and a designated biosphere reserve. Recognized globally as one of the 19 biodiversity hotspots, this vibrant park is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species, lush wetlands, tropical forests, and riverine landscapes.

Located about 12 km north of Tinsukia in the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, the park is nestled between the mighty Brahmaputra and Lohit Rivers in the north, and the Dibru River to the south. This strategic location contributes to the park's rich ecological diversity and stunning landscapes.

The park primarily consists of tropical moist deciduous forests, semi-evergreen forests, cane brakes, grasslands, and is home to the largest salix swamp forest in Northeast India. The area's climate is typically monsoonal, with hot and humid summers, and cool, relatively dry winters. Rainfall ranges from 2300 mm to 3800 mm annually, with June to September being the wettest months. Temperatures vary between 7°C in winter and 34°C in summer.

Wildlife and Fauna of Dibru Saikhowa

Dibru Saikhowa is famous for its population of white-winged wood ducks, a highly endangered species that thrives in its natural habitat here. Another rare and mesmerizing highlight is the feral horses, or wild horses, which roam freely in this unique ecosystem.

The park is home to over 36 species of mammals, including:

  • Royal Bengal Tiger

  • Leopard & Clouded Leopard

  • Jungle Cat, Sloth Bear, Dhole

  • Asiatic Elephant, Wild Boar, Sambar, Hog Deer, Barking Deer

  • Asiatic Water Buffalo

  • Hoolock Gibbon, Slow Loris, Capped Langur

  • Assamese, Rhesus & Pig-Tailed Macaque

  • Gangetic Dolphin, Chinese Pangolin, Malayan Giant Squirrel

Reptilian and aquatic life in the park is equally rich, with:

  • 2 species of monitor lizards

  • 8 species of turtles

  • 8 species of snakes

  • 62 species of fishes

Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that over 350 bird species have been recorded here, making it a prime location for birdwatching.

Best Time to Visit Dibru Saikhowa

The ideal time to visit Dibru Saikhowa National Park is between November and April, as notified by the park authorities. During this period, the weather is pleasant and suitable for wildlife exploration.

Entry Conditions:

  • Entry is allowed only with written permission from the park authority.

  • Entry after sunset and before sunrise is strictly prohibited.

  • Picnicking or night halts inside the park are not permitted.

By Air:
Nearest airport is Dibrugarh, about 40 km from Tinsukia.

By Rail:
Nearest railway station is also at Dibrugarh, connected with Guwahati via broad gauge.

By Road:

  • From Tinsukia (10 km to Guijan, 50 km to Dhola entry point)

  • Public and private transport like buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are available.

  • The park is about 500 km from Guwahati.
