Who Is The First Intelligence Bureau (ib) Chief From Assam?

Tapan Kumar Deka is the first person from Assam to serve as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India's premier internal intelligence agency. A 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, he assumed charge as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau on 1 July 2022 and completed his tenure on 30 June 2026. His four-year tenure made him one of the longest-serving Directors of the Intelligence Bureau in recent years.

Born on 25 February 1963 in Sarthebari of Barpeta district, Assam, Tapan Kumar Deka spent his early years in Tezpur. He completed his higher education with a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Delhi. During his student life, he was associated with the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), reflecting his early involvement in student leadership and public affairs.

After successfully clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his first attempt, he joined the Indian Police Service in the 1988 batch and was allotted the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He later built an outstanding career in the Intelligence Bureau, where he spent decades handling counter-terrorism, intelligence gathering and internal security operations across the country.

Tapan Kumar Deka's appointment as the first IB chief from Assam is considered a significant milestone for the state. His leadership at India's top intelligence organisation highlighted the growing contribution of Assam to national security and inspired many young aspirants from the North East to pursue careers in the civil services and security agencies.
