Early Life
Elvis Ali Hazarika was born on 21 July 1981 and was brought up in Bhoralumukh, Guwahati, Assam. His father, Late Elban Ali Hazarika, hailed from North Lakhimpur, while his mother, Deepika Ali Hazarika, belonged to Barpeta. From a very young age, he showed an extraordinary attraction towards water. At just two and a half years old, he began swimming, and within a few days of formal training under renowned coach Anuwar Rasul at Dighalipukhuri, he amazed everyone with his natural talent. By the age of four, he successfully crossed Joysagar, attracting appreciation from the then Chief Minister of Assam.
Education
Elvis completed his schooling at Don Bosco School, Guwahati, passing his High School examination in 1997. As competitive swimming demanded long training camps and national commitments, he chose to dedicate himself entirely to sports instead of pursuing higher academic studies.
Swimming Career
Elvis Ali Hazarika started competing professionally at an early age and quickly established himself as one of India's finest swimmers. In 1989, he won a silver medal at the Sub-Junior National Championship, becoming the first male swimmer from Assam to achieve the feat. During the 1990 National Championship, he won four gold medals and went on to dominate Indian swimming for nearly a decade.
At the age of nine, he represented India at the Asia Pacific Swimming Championship in Singapore, becoming one of the youngest Indian swimmers to participate in an international competition. He later represented India in China, Hong Kong, Switzerland, South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal and several other countries.
Throughout his competitive career, Elvis won numerous medals and created more than twenty national swimming records. His achievements include 128 gold medals in state competitions, 134 gold medals at national championships and 6 international gold medals, along with many silver and bronze medals. Several of his national records remained unbeaten for many years.
Although he qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, a severe attack of septicemia kept him hospitalized for several months, preventing him from fulfilling his Olympic dream.
Open Water and Channel Swimming
After retiring from competitive pool swimming, Elvis began focusing on long-distance channel swimming. His achievements in open-water swimming brought him worldwide recognition.
He became the first swimmer from Northeast India to successfully cross the Catalina Channel in California, USA, in 2019. In 2022, he became the first Assamese swimmer to cross the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland, completing one of the world's most dangerous swimming routes known for freezing temperatures and jellyfish.
In 2023, Elvis scripted history by becoming the first swimmer from Northeast India to complete a two-way relay crossing of the English Channel, swimming between England and France before returning. The challenging 78-kilometre journey demanded exceptional physical endurance and mental strength while facing powerful tides, cold water, jellyfish and unpredictable weather conditions.
His adventurous swimming expeditions have also included successful swims across the Gulf of Gdansk in Poland, Robben Island in South Africa and the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, further strengthening his reputation as one of India's leading endurance swimmers.
