Early Life
Abhijit Bhattacharya was born and brought up in Tezpur, Assam, where he developed a strong interest in sports from an early age. During his childhood, he actively participated in badminton before destiny led him towards volleyball. His talent was identified by renowned coach Deposi Bhagawati, who recognized his physical abilities and encouraged him to pursue volleyball professionally. With determination, disciplined training, and family support, Abhijit quickly established himself as one of Assam's most promising volleyball players.
Education
Although Abhijit's sporting career became the primary focus of his life, he successfully balanced academics alongside rigorous training. His disciplined approach to education and sports helped shape the leadership qualities that later defined both his playing career and his work as a sports administrator.
Volleyball Career
Abhijit Bhattacharya represented the Indian Men's National Volleyball Team between 1995 and 2005, playing more than 100 international matches across major championships and international tournaments. His outstanding performances earned him the distinction of becoming the first volleyball player from Northeast India to represent and captain the Indian national team.
From 2003 to 2005, he served as the captain of India, guiding the team with exceptional leadership and helping improve India's international standing in volleyball. Throughout his international career, he participated in 22 major international tournaments, winning multiple medals and establishing himself as one of the country's finest volleyball players of his generation.

Brahmaputra Volleyball League
Following his retirement from international volleyball, Abhijit Bhattacharya dedicated himself to developing sports at the grassroots level. In 2019, he launched the Assam Volleyball Mission 100, which later evolved into the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) in 2020.
What started with only 50 village teams has grown into one of the world's largest community-driven volleyball leagues, involving over 400 teams, 100+ villages, and more than 12,000 children across Assam. The league promotes equal participation for boys and girls, encourages community ownership, and provides rural athletes with opportunities to compete, learn leadership, and build confidence.
The initiative has received international appreciation for using volleyball as a platform for education, social inclusion, and women's empowerment.
