Guwahati's Maharaja Prithu Flyover to Open on March 10
Guwahati is preparing for a significant boost to its urban infrastructure as the much anticipated Maharaja Prithu Flyover is set to open for public use on March 10. The project, which connects Noonmati with Dighalipukhuri, is considered one of the most important infrastructure developments in Assam in recent years.
The flyover will be inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at around 5 pm. Once opened, the structure will become the longest flyover in Northeast India and a major step toward improving traffic movement in Guwahati.
Cost and Construction Details
The Maharaja Prithu Flyover has been built at an estimated cost of around Rs 850 crore. The four lane elevated corridor stretches roughly between 4.5 km and 4.8 km depending on the section measured, making it the longest flyover in Assam.
The construction work was carried out by Gautam Construction Company Limited and Anupam Nirman Private Limited under the supervision of the Public Works Department. Although the original timeline allowed nearly three years for completion, the construction work was completed in about 28 months.
Work on the project started in late 2023 and progressed rapidly with the aim of addressing Guwahati's growing traffic congestion.
Connectivity Between Key Areas
The flyover connects several important parts of the city including Dighalipukhuri, Reserve Bank of India Point, Zoo Road and Noonmati. This route experiences heavy traffic every day and often becomes a bottleneck during peak hours.
With the new flyover in operation, commuters are expected to experience smoother traffic flow and reduced travel time across these busy corridors. The project will also improve connectivity between eastern and central parts of Guwahati.
Phased Opening Plan
Earlier announcements suggested that the flyover might be opened in phases. Initially there were discussions about allowing two wheelers first before opening the structure fully for all vehicles. However, the state government decided to move ahead with the formal inauguration once the construction was ready.
The government also planned the inauguration schedule keeping public convenience in mind. Authorities wanted to ensure that the bridge becomes operational before the busy Bihu festival period, when traffic in the city increases significantly.
Future Connectivity Expansion
The Maharaja Prithu Flyover is expected to become part of a larger traffic improvement network in Guwahati. According to plans shared by the Chief Minister, the flyover will eventually be connected to the Ulubari bridge in the future.
An additional arm is also planned along Rajgarh Road, which will further strengthen the city's road connectivity and help distribute traffic more efficiently.
A Tribute to Maharaja Prithu
The flyover has been named after Maharaja Prithu , a historical ruler of the ancient Kamarupa kingdom who is remembered for defending the region against invasions during the medieval period. Naming the flyover after him adds cultural and historical significance to this modern infrastructure project.
By honoring the legacy of Maharaja Prithu , the government aims to highlight an important figure from Assam's history while creating a landmark development in Guwahati.
Major Boost for Guwahati's Infrastructure
The inauguration of the Maharaja Prithu Flyover marks a major milestone in the city's infrastructure development. With Guwahati continuing to grow as the largest urban center in Northeast India, projects like this are essential to support increasing traffic and urban expansion.
Once fully operational, the flyover is expected to significantly ease congestion along one of the busiest traffic corridors in the city and improve daily commuting for thousands of residents.
The project also reflects the state's ongoing efforts to modernize urban transport infrastructure and create better connectivity for the future.
