Thengal Manor, Jorhat - A Royal Heritage Stay in Assam

The manor holds immense historical importance as the birthplace of Assam first daily Assamese newspaper, "Dainik Batori", launched on 12 August 1935. After being damaged during the devastating Assam earthquake of 1950, the house remained abandoned until it was restored in 1965 by tea baron Late Hemendra Prasad Barooah, ensuring that its architectural grandeur and cultural legacy were preserved for future generations.

Surrounded by lush gardens and rural landscapes, Thengal Manor features colonial-style architecture with high ceilings, wide verandas, vintage furniture, antique mirrors, fireplaces, and classic decor that transport guests to the era of British tea planters. The property offers four double deluxe rooms and one single superior room, each thoughtfully designed with attached bathrooms, dressing rooms, and period furnishings. Guests also have access to spacious common areas including a lounge, dining room, living room, kitchen, pantry, and a beautiful lawn with a swimming pool.

Staying at Thengal Manor is not just about luxury, but about experiencing the lifestyle of Assam pioneering tea families in an authentic village setting. The calm environment, heritage interiors, and personalized hospitality make it one of the most unique heritage stays in Northeast India.

The culinary experience at Thengal Manor is equally memorable. Guests are served authentic Assamese cuisine, including traditional Assamese thalis featuring Fish Tenga, lentils, bamboo shoot chutney, mashed potatoes, seasonal local vegetables, chicken curry, duck curry, and aromatic Joha rice. The flavors reflect the rich food culture of Assam and are highly appreciated by visitors.

In addition to overnight stays, visitors can explore selected areas of the manor that showcase priceless antiques, historical artifacts, and colonial-era architecture. There is also a swimming pool at the entrance and a large open area ideal for leisure walks and photography. The entry fee for non-staying visitors is approximately 150 per person.
