Why Do Birds Die Mysteriously in Jatinga Assam? The Truth Behind the Jatinga Bird Suicide Myth
Every year during the late monsoon months, particularly from September to November, several species of birds are found dead or injured in and around the village. This strange occurrence led to the popular belief that birds deliberately end their lives here, giving rise to the term "bird suicide valley". However, scientific research has revealed that this is not an act of suicide but a rare natural phenomenon caused by environmental and geographical factors.
Jatinga is located on a ridge in the Borail Hills, and its unique topography plays a crucial role in this event. During monsoon nights, the region experiences dense fog, strong winds, cloud cover, and extremely low visibility. These conditions severely affect the navigation abilities of birds, especially local and short-distance migratory species. As birds fly through this area at night, they become disoriented and lose their sense of direction.
One of the most important factors behind this phenomenon is artificial light. Disoriented birds are attracted to the lights from village houses, mistaking them for safe resting areas. In their confused state, birds fly toward these light sources and end up colliding with trees, buildings, electric wires, or the ground. Many birds also become exhausted after repeated failed attempts to escape the fog, making them vulnerable to injuries and death.
Interestingly, studies have shown that this phenomenon is limited to a specific stretch of land about 1.5 kilometers long and 200 meters wide, and birds consistently approach the area from the northern side. Long-distance migratory birds are rarely affected, while most victims are resident birds or seasonal migrants from nearby valleys.
Before scientific explanations emerged, local communities believed that evil spirits or supernatural forces were responsible for the mass bird deaths. This belief gave rise to haunted stories and folklore surrounding Jatinga, reinforcing its mysterious reputation. Even today, despite scientific theories, the exact reason why this phenomenon occurs only at Jatinga and only under specific conditions remains partly unexplained.
Due to its uniqueness, Jatinga has become one of the worlds most fascinating bird behavior hotspots. It attracts ornithologists, wildlife researchers, and curious travelers from across the globe. Today, the killing of birds is strictly prohibited, and the area is promoted for bird watching, research, and conservation, allowing visitors to witness one of natures most intriguing mysteries responsibly.
