It hosts the so-called Asia's second largest banyan tree. Known for its massive size and centuries-old history, it is not just a natural marvel but also a symbol of Assam’s ecological and cultural heritage.
The banyan tree reportedly spans four bighas (roughly one acre), making it monumental in scale. The tree is estimated to be over 200 years old, with celebratory events marking its age each year.
The area surrounding the banyan grove is associated with both Shiva and Kali worship. The site is popularly called Kalibari Than, while the Shiva shrine is also known as Shiv Than. According to local accounts, the Shiva temple was established in 1934. The premises are also associated with Sri Sri Shantiniketan Jan Seva Ashram, which has played a role in community activities and the preservation of local traditions.
