The foundation of Swahid Smarak Kshetra was laid with the purpose of creating a permanent space where citizens could reflect on the Assam Movement, understand its background, and honor the martyrs who fought for the protection of indigenous rights. The memorial became a symbolic representation of the Assam Movement, which had been led by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP). Their demands centered around safeguarding Assamese identity and addressing issues related to illegal immigration that had affected the social and cultural fabric of the state.
Before its inauguration, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a detailed inspection of the site, reviewing the installations and ensuring the memorial aligned with the vision of commemorating the martyrs with dignity. He noted that nearly 400 martyrs did not have available photographs, and therefore, the government recreated their portraits based on descriptions provided by their families. This gesture reflected the state's effort to ensure that no sacrifice remained forgotten.
The memorial featured a towering 55-metre statue that became the central attraction of the site. Designed to inspire both reverence and curiosity, the statue stood as a tribute to the courage, determination, and sacrifice shown during the movement. The entire campus incorporated water bodies, landscaped areas, bicycle tracks, a prayer hall, an auditorium, and a dedicated sound-and-light show that depicted the history of the Assam Movement and Assam's broader cultural journey. These elements collectively turned the memorial into a space for education, reflection, and cultural engagement.
Swahid Smarak Kshetra was officially inaugurated on December 10, observed as Swahid Divas, the day that marked the first martyrdom during the Assam Agitation. The inauguration was accompanied by statewide tributes, including the performance of the patriotic song 'Swahid Pranamu Tumak' across districts. Schools, colleges, and institutions participated in the remembrance, creating an atmosphere of collective respect.
On the same day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the new office building of the Implementation of Assam Accord Department, along with a photo gallery dedicated to preserving historic moments of the Assam Movement. This gallery allowed visitors to revisit important events, witness rare photographs, and gain insights into the struggle that shaped Assam's socio-political history.
The memorial also served as an educational space for future generations. Students, researchers, and visitors could explore installations that narrated the timeline of the movement. The site was intentionally designed not only as a place of remembrance but also as a public learning zone that encouraged historical awareness, cultural preservation, and community participation.
