Dhubri Solar Power Project in Assam: India's First Large-Scale Solar Plant in the Northeast
Located at Khudigaon Pt-II in Dhubri district, the solar facility has been developed on 330 acres of land leased from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for a period of 28 years. The project was awarded to SGEL in February 2023 through competitive bidding, at a tariff of ₹3.92 per unit, with a total project cost of ₹367.44 crore.
The foundation stone for the project was laid in March 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting its national importance in India's renewable energy transition. Commercial operations officially began on January 15, 2026, marking SJVN's first operational asset in the North Eastern Region (NER).
With a capacity utilization factor of 23 percent, the Dhubri Solar Power Plant is expected to generate approximately 141.13 million units of electricity in its first year. Over its operational life of 25 years, cumulative power generation is projected to reach around 3,230 million units, strengthening Assam's energy security and reducing its dependence on conventional power sources.
The project plays a crucial role in helping Assam meet its Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) and improving electricity availability during peak demand hours. The power generated is supplied to APDCL, ensuring affordable and sustainable electricity for households, businesses, and industries across the region.
Environmentally, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.58 lakh tonnes over its lifetime, contributing to India's national climate commitments and Net Zero goals. By replacing fossil fuel-based generation, it supports cleaner air, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and long-term ecological sustainability.
The Dhubri Solar Power Project also delivered major economic and social benefits. During construction, it generated significant local employment and continues to create jobs in operations and maintenance. Improved power reliability is expected to encourage industrial growth, investment, and infrastructure development in Assam.
Strategically, the project represents a major milestone for SJVN's renewable energy expansion, increasing the company's total installed capacity to over 2,537.5 MW. It also marks a shift in the Northeast's energy mix, which has traditionally depended on hydropower and thermal sources.
As Assam's first large-scale solar power plant, the Dhubri project stands as a symbol of the state's clean energy future and India's broader transition toward sustainable power generation.
