The first known ruler of the Moamoria (or Matak) region was Sarbananda Singha. He was selected by his followers to lead the autonomous Matak Rajya, established in the area of Bengmara (modern-day Tinsukia district). This occurred after the Moamoria rebellion weakened the Ahom kingdom.
While the Moamoria rebellion itself was a series of uprisings against the Ahom kingdom, rather than a single, unified entity with a single founder, Sarbananda Singha became the first ruler of the de facto independent Matak state that emerged from the rebellion. He was also known as Mejera and was of Chutia ethnicity.
