The earliest known Assamese writer is Hema Saraswati, who wrote a short poem called "Prahlada Charita". This work is dated to the pre-Vaishnavite period, before the influence of Sankaradeva. Another important figure in the early development of Assamese literature is Madhava Kandali, who translated the Ramayana into Assamese verse, known as "Kotha Ramayana".
While Hema Saraswati is credited with the earliest known work, Madhava Kandali's Kotha Ramayana is a significant milestone in the development of the language, showcasing the ability to render a major literary work in Assamese.
