The First Treaty of Majuli (1563) was a significant peace agreement in the history of medieval Assam, concluded between Koch King Nara Narayan and Ahom King Sukhaamphaa (also known as Khora Roja).
This treaty marked the end of hostilities between the powerful Koch Kingdom and the Ahom Kingdom during the mid-16th century. After a prolonged conflict, the Koch forces, led by Chilarai (the younger brother of Nara Narayan), advanced into Ahom territory, prompting the Ahoms to negotiate peace.
Under the terms of the treaty:
-
The Ahoms accepted Koch supremacy in certain areas.
-
There was an exchange of tribute and assurances of non-aggression.
-
Political boundaries were redefined to maintain stability in the Brahmaputra valley.
Signed at Majuli, the world’s largest river island, this treaty helped avoid further bloodshed and stabilized relations between the two kingdoms for a time, influencing the balance of power in medieval Assam.
