The first Mughal attack on Assam took place during the reign of Emperor Jahangir in 1615. This marked the beginning of the long-standing conflicts between the Mughal Empire and the Ahom kingdom.
Under Jahangir’s orders, Mughal forces advanced into Assam with the aim of expanding imperial territory into the Brahmaputra Valley. However, the Ahoms, known for their strong military organization and expertise in guerrilla and riverine warfare, resisted the invasion fiercely. This initial clash set the stage for a series of battles over the next several decades, including the famous Battle of Saraighat (1671), where the Ahoms decisively defeated the Mughals.
The Mughal-Ahom rivalry remains an important chapter in Assam’s history, symbolizing the region’s resilience against one of the most powerful empires of medieval India.
