The Ahoms defeated the Mughals seventeen times during a series of military conflicts spanning the 17th century. These repeated victories showcased the strategic brilliance of Ahom commanders and the resilience of their forces in defending Assam’s sovereignty.
The most famous of these victories was the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where the Ahom army, under the leadership of Lachit Borphukan, decisively repelled a massive Mughal naval and land attack. Using superior guerrilla tactics, knowledge of riverine warfare, and unwavering determination, the Ahoms managed to protect their kingdom from Mughal control.
Despite multiple invasions, the Mughals were never able to permanently occupy Assam, making the Ahom–Mughal conflict one of the most remarkable chapters in Indian military history.
