The first Assamese children’s magazine is Lora Bandhu, launched in the year 1889 by the literary legend Lakshminath Bezbaroa. It holds a special place in Assam’s literary history as the earliest publication dedicated to the literary and moral development of children.
Lora Bandhu, meaning “Friend of Boys,” was created with the goal of nurturing young minds through engaging stories, moral teachings, folk tales, rhymes, and cultural narratives in the Assamese language. It was one of the first steps toward building a structured platform for children’s literature in Assam.
Lakshminath Bezbaroa, known as the Sahityarathi of Assam, envisioned the magazine as a tool to instill values, creativity, and a love for the mother tongue among young readers. It inspired generations of children and laid the groundwork for future Assamese children's publications like Mouchaq and Sofura.
