The first tea company of Assam is the Assam Company India Limited (ACIL), established in 1839. It was the first company in India to pioneer commercial tea cultivation, marking the beginning of the world-famous Assam tea industry.
ACIL was founded by British entrepreneurs with support from the East India Company, following the successful discovery of wild tea plants in Assam by Robert Bruce in 1823. The company started systematic tea plantations in the Upper Assam region, especially around Sivasagar and Dibrugarh.
Assam Company quickly became a major player in India’s colonial trade network, exporting high-quality Assam tea to Britain and other parts of the world. It played a crucial role in establishing Assam as a global hub for black tea production.
