Which Is The Largest Man-made Forest In Assam?

The largest man-made forest in Assam is the Molai Forest, a remarkable ecological creation by a single individual — Jadav Payeng, famously known as the "Forest Man of India".

Located on the Majuli-adjacent sandbar of the Brahmaputra River near Jorhat, Molai Forest spreads over 1,360 acres (approximately 550 hectares). What makes it even more astonishing is that it was planted and nurtured by Payeng alone, starting in 1979.

Jadav Payeng has been honored with the Padma Shri in 2015 for his lifelong dedication to afforestation and environmental protection. His story has inspired global documentaries, including "Forest Man" by William Douglas McMaster, which won awards at Cannes.
