Named after the great 15th-century saint and reformer Srimanta Sankardev, this cultural institution celebrates the unity of Assam’s people through art, music, dance, literature, and theatre.

The foundation of the Kalakshetra was laid on 2nd February 1988 by the then Governor of Assam, Sri Bhisma Narain Singh, and it was inaugurated on 9th November 1998 by the Hon’ble President of India, Sri K.R. Narayanan. Spread across 17.5 hectares of land, this architectural marvel falls under Clause VI of the Assam Accord (1985) and serves as a living monument of Assam’s cultural identity.
